Amy

Amy Chavez grew up in a small town in southern Ohio, USA. She lives on Shiraishi Island, an island of 800 people, in Japan's Inland Sea. As the writer of 'Japan Lite', she attempts to explain some of the complexities of Japan through her own experiences.

Fred the Boulder

Fred is a granite rock of the plutonic, ignasious family and is the potential villain in Amy's life. He lives right above her house, threatening to drop down on it any day.

Frank the Flying cat

Amy found Frank when he was just 6 weeks old. Frank is a girl. She was named after Frank Sinatra for his blue eyes. Frank was once dyed green for St. Patrick's Day. Frank has an unusaual habit of flying through the house.

Ueda San

Ueda-san is Amy's nextdoor neighbor. She is 70 years old and still tills her vegetable garden by hand. Ueda-san advises Amy about life on the island. Meet Ueda san

Yamakawa San

Nakakawa-san is 80-something and is one of the colorful characters on the island. She likes to sing to the sea and talk about sex. She has 7 children.

The Buddhist Priest

Mr. Norimi is the Buddhist Priest on the island. He advises Amy on matters of Buddhism and Shintoism.
Sorry, you can't meet Mr. Norimi.... he's too shy.
